"Libraries Now! - Inspiring, Surprising, Empowering"
11-16 August 2012, Helsinki, Finland

Contemporary libraries have to fulfil many roles. They must meet the increasingly diverse needs of users, while remaining repositories of knowledge and culture. Because of their rich and varied content, libraries have always had great potential to inspire and surprise.
They are a gateway to wisdom found on the shelves, accessed through the net, or via the media. But today’s information age challenges libraries to create new content and to interact in new ways with users.
Libraries are symbols of human progress and continue to empower individuals and communities by offering access to information, knowledge and education. They remain relevant by helping people of all ages and
occupations make sense of the world around them and promote social and political participation. Libraries across the globe are a vital structural part of life-long learning, and continue to be central in overcoming information barriers.
But libraries are more than just a collection of documents from the past and the present. While their quiet spaces remain a source of creativity, they support and educate their users in both new and traditional media.
Libraries in the 21st Century must also be at the forefront of identifying high-quality, relevant, material in the information chaos of the web. As the pace of life quickens, libraries are competing for a shrinking slice of people’s time and attention. The internet has replaced much of the work traditionally undertaken by libraries. The way we seek out information has also changed; now we Google; we consult friends and colleagues through social media; and move from group to group freely and voluntarily.
To survive successfully in this new challenging era, libraries need to embrace the future, and to inspire, surprise, and empower!
